A sunset along the 2 km waterfront. The main industry here is fishing. The protected waters of the estuary
provide shelter and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico for the fleet of fishing boats. In addition to the many varieties of fish there are seasons for lobster and octupus.

Fishing boats along the malecon.Fishermen use hand lines with multiple hooks and gill nets.Lobster fishermen dive for their catch.Octopus fishermen use land crabs tied to multiple lines.Hooks are not necessary as the Octopus are too stubborn to give up their lunch.Fishing is the most important industry here.

The high salinity of the water in the estuary supports
the food supply that the flamingos favor. The shallow
waters in remote areas of the reserve are perfect for
nesting and raising their young. As the distance from the
the opening to the Gulf of mexico increases the salinity increases. This is also the reason for the saltworks
(the salinera at Los Colorados)which has been here for centuries.
